Tops Friendly Markets Public and Media Relations Manager Kathy Sautter announced, "Due to the forecasted extreme weather conditions, and for the safety of our associates and customers, Tops has made the decision to close all of its stores located in Erie and Niagara counties at 2 p.m. today. Our distribution center will also be closing at 2 p.m. Weather conditions will dictate when we will reopen. Please watch our social media pages for updates. Thank you."
Salvation Army: Inclement weather may end this year's Red Kettle Campaign early

The Salvation Army may have to end its 2022 Red Kettle Campaign fundraiser earlier than scheduled throughout the Empire State Division as the possibility of high winds, slick roads, blowing snow and frigid wind chill temperatures are forecast throughout most of the region for Friday and Saturday.

The New York State Department of Labor on Thursday announced it is "improving the process for unemployment insurance customers to get their 1099-G form this tax season." NYSDOL will be automatically mailing the form to New Yorkers who claimed benefits in 2022 and have not opted to receive the form electronically.

The Niagara Falls Heritage Gateways project, which is comprised of five public gateway features intended to stimulate reinvestment in Niagara Falls, will move forward. In addition, New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation has approved an agreement authorizing the Aquarium of Niagara to manage operations at the currently closed Niagara Gorge Discovery Center. Construction will now start on transforming the Niagara Gorge Discovery Center into Great Lakes 360 - an "exciting new space for Great Lakes-focused exhibits."

Minimum wage increase for upstate New Yorkers

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced New York state will continue with the $15 minimum hourly wage phase-in for upstate counties on Dec. 31. Workers outside of New York City, Long Island and Westchester County will see an increase by $1 per hour, from $13.20 to $14.20, following a statutorily required economic analysis conducted by the New York State Division of the Budget.

The International Institute of Buffalo rereleases winter multilingual weather preparedness information

The International Institute of Buffalo (IIB) is rereleasing what it called important life-saving information in many languages on its website to help more people prepare for the coming winter weather. IIB updated the list to include winter weather preparedness information in nine different languages, including Arabic, Burmese, Dari, English, French, Karen, Pashto, Somali and Swahili.
