The Niagara County Department of Employment and Training will hold a career fair, for those seeking employment, from 12:30-3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, at the Niagara Riverside Resort, 7001 Buffalo Ave., Niagara Falls. Close to 70 companies with open positions have signed up to take part, and there is still room for employers who would like to participate.

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance announced it has started mailing additional financial relief to eligible New Yorkers. The Tax Department is issuing $475 million in additional New York state child and earned income tax payments to about 1.8 million people. Most of the checks should arrive by the end of October.

The Niagara County Board of Elections announced the last day to register to vote for the Nov. 8 general election is Oct. 14. The Board of Elections will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, and until 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, for the purpose of registering individuals.

Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn on Tuesday announced a jury found 63-year-old John M. Sauberan of Buffalo guilty of one count of murder in the second degree (class "A-I" felony). Jurors rendered a decision in the afternoon after three hours of deliberation following a five-day trial, convicting the defendant of the only charge in the indictment against him.

Congressman Brian Higgins announced a federal grant totaling $365,535 awarded to the Massachusetts Avenue Project and Grassroots Gardens of Western New York. Funding comes from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and is awarded through the National Institute of Food and Agriculture's Community Food Projects Grant program. It will support the Buffalo Food Justice Project, which aims to address food equity and access in underserved communities.

At 6:14 p.m. Monday, Niagara Falls Fire Department crews responded to a fire at Myles Scrap Yard at 5501 Lockport Road. Multiple vehicles on the southwest section of the yard were on fire. Because of the location, it took several hours to bring it under control, due to the difficulty getting equipment back to the area of the fire.
