Congressman Brian Higgins and City of Niagara Falls Mayor Robert Restaino announced several public safety investments made possible thanks to the more than $57 million in federal funding received by the city through the American Rescue Plan. Niagara Falls has plans to invest over $11.4 million of its American Rescue Plan funding in public safety, including new and improved police and fire equipment.

Just before noon on Friday, Niagara County Sheriff's Office dispatch received a call from a boater in the lower Niagara River stating there was a body floating in the river. U.S. Coast Guard retrieved the person from the water. The individual was then brought to the Coast Guard Station in Fort Niagara State Park.

Congressman Brian Higgins is pushing to end what his team called the "unreasonably long wait time" for new NEXUS cards commonly used by Western New Yorkers crossing into Canada. Higgins, who hears weekly from residents on this issue, said NEXUS card applicants are currently being made to wait nine months for an appointment at the Niagara Falls enrollment center.

Sheriff Michael J. Filicetti announced Niagara County law enforcement agencies will participate in a special effort to bring awareness to the dangers of impaired driving. In a combined effort to stop impaired driving, prevent injuries, and save lives, law enforcement officers across New York will take to the roads. The statewide STOP-DWI high-visibility engagement campaign efforts start Friday, Aug. 19, and will end Monday, Sept. 5.
