The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper will hold a virtual outreach event from noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, to update the public about ongoing efforts to restore natural resources in the Buffalo River Area of Concern (AOC) and the proposed removal of the "Restrictions on Dredging Activities Beneficial Use Impairment" (BUI).

Gov. Kathy Hochul has signed legislation that will increase public awareness on job opportunities in New York state. Legislation (A.8458A/S.6803A) will authorize the New York State Department of Labor to develop a public awareness campaign that will promote the New York State Job Bank - an online resource maintained by the NYSDOL to connect job seekers with over 250,000 jobs across all industries.

The Erie County Department of Health (ECDOH) Office of Health Equity has developed a health and wellness survey for Erie County residents. Responses will inform the work of this office as it compiles a needs assessment report and develops pilot models and programs to improve health disparities.

Though summer may be winding down, the free summer concerts in Youngstown are still in full swing. These concerts, a collaboration between volunteers and the Village of Youngstown mayor and Board of Trustees, have been bringing music to the area on Friday nights for over 20 years. Musical acts this year have featured bagpipes to yacht rock, and lots in between.

Niagara County Sheriff's Office K9 Reggie will receive a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from nonprofit organization Vested Interest in K9s Inc. K9 Reggie's vest is sponsored by Christine Rath of Youngstown, and will be embroidered with the sentiment "Born to Love - Trained to Serve - Loyal Always." Delivery is expected within eight to 10 weeks.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced a wetland restoration project will begin at Woodlawn Beach State Park in Erie County this fall. The $1.6 million project is being funded through a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

After retirement from his career as an electrical engineer, Gregory Madejski discovered a new passion as a boat builder. For 26 years, he built kayaks and canoes, some from kits and some not, from cedar plywood and from cedar strips. He also paddled those boats in Paddles Up at Beaver Island State Park and elsewhere.
