A wind blew across the water at Beaver Island State Park at 7 a.m., July 30. I stepped into a kayak for the first ecotour of the 2022 Paddles Up event at the park's beach and was pushed off. The water was slightly choppy as the group of kayakers, led by retired government biologist Paul Leuchner, started to travel in the river, heading around the island.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village (BNHV) will host the second annual "Preservation Day!" This free event is presented in partnership with Preservation Buffalo Niagara and the Town of Amherst Historic Preservation Commission, and is sponsored by a Certified Local Government grant from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation.

As of Aug. 20, the Care-n-Share Food Pantry is relocating to 3745 Ransomville Road (Jill's Play Yard). Care-n-Share serves the needs of residents from Ransomville, Lewiston, Youngstown, Wilson and Sanborn. It's moving to a larger space just up the road from its current site.

The Niagara County Legislature voted Tuesday to allocate up to $100,000 for the construction of a new Purple Heart monument on the grounds of the Niagara County Courthouse in Lockport. The vote endorsed the recommendations of an ad hoc committee that was formed earlier this year to come up with a design and a location to honor Niagara County's Purple Heart recipients.

James Lucas, Sheriff Michael Filicetti and the Niagara County underwater recovery team to support a new underwater metal detector unit for their division. The new device has advanced technology to make it easier for the underwater team to locate a variety of articles when needed in certain situations and difficult conditions.

New York Attorney General Letitia James is taking action to crack down on rampant robocalls and protect consumers nationwide. She joined a coalition of 50 attorneys general to form a nationwide, bipartisan Anti-Robocall Litigation Taskforce to investigate and take legal action against telecommunications companies responsible for enabling a majority of foreign robocalls into the U.S. The taskforce will work to cut down on illegal robocalls made to consumers nationwide.

The Walk for Kidney Health will return to the Buffalo Outer Harbor on Sunday, Aug. 21. The annual event is an opportunity for the community to show support for people with kidney disease, share health information and honor organ donors. Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the launch of the health care and mental hygiene worker bonus program. Enacted in the fiscal year 2023 New York state budget, the program includes $1.3 billion allocated for the payment of recruitment and retention bonuses to certain health care and mental hygiene workers, a key initiative in the governor's aim to increase the state's health care workforce by 20% over the next five years.
