On Friday, New York State Sen. Sean Ryan was joined by local elected officials and community leaders to announce plans for a pocket park at a former industrial site on Niagara Street. The project will be funded by a $250,000 New York state grant secured by Ryan. Buffalo Common Council member David Rivera's office secured an additional $40,000 for project planning costs.

Gov. Kathy Hochul has directed a pay increase for state lifeguards to help address a staffing shortage at New York State Park beaches and pools, and Department of Environmental Conservation campgrounds and day use areas beaches. Starting pay rates for lifeguards at upstate facilities will increase 34%, from $14.95 per hour to $20 per hour, and 21% for lifeguards at downstate facilities, from $18.15 per hour to $22 per hour.

These regulatory changes are necessary for New York state to remain in compliance with the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) by reducing recreational harvest of scup and black sea bass.
