A new training facility for the Niagara County Law Enforcement Academy will be built on the Sanborn campus of Niagara County Community College. An estimated $2.27 million for the building was appropriated in the SUNY building fund adopted by the state budget passage a few weeks ago.

Congressman Brian Higgins, D-NY-26, joined local veterans Monday to announce the Boxing Therapy for Parkinson's Access Act of 2022 (H.R. 6774). The bipartisan bill, introduced by Higgins and Congressman Darin LaHood (R-IL-18), directs the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to provide coverage for boxing-based therapy classes to veterans diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders.

"HOPE Day," the annual 24-hour match challenge day of giving to benefit Appeal, is set for Wednesday, May 11, across Western New York. The first $75,000 raised will be matched dollar-for-dollar, with gifts from donors who wish to remain anonymous, in the ongoing effort to reach 2022's $9.5 million goal in support of Catholic Charities of Buffalo and the "Fund for the Faith." Appeal 2022 has currently raised $7,759,477, or 81% of its goal to date.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced new recreational saltwater fishing regulations, effective immediately, for the summer flounder (fluke) season that starts May 1. DEC said these changes will provide more opportunities for anglers by extending the season a total of 12 fishing days to Oct. 9, and decreasing the minimum size limit by half an inch.

Dr. Michael Hess, a prominent Lockport dentist, drove to Lewiston on Thursday and shared a painting he owns with a group of enthusiastic volunteers who were astounded with the quality, accuracy and rarity of the artwork. It is the only known illustration of the French vessel Frontenac landing in Lewiston on Dec. 6, 1678, with Father Louis Hennepin aboard.
