Celebrate 2022 outdoors with 'First Day Hikes' at state parks, historic sites, wildlife areas & public lands

Gov. Kathy Hochul recently encouraged New Yorkers to spend time in the outdoors this holiday season and celebrate the new year at state parks, historic sites, wildlife areas, trails and public lands across the Empire State on Jan. 1, 2022. The variety of hikes offered includes seal walks, fire tower treks, lakefront trails, boardwalks, towpaths, walks along waterfalls, historic estates and military forts.

St. Martin youth group participates in Wreaths Across America

For a number of years, a few older veterans got together annually to place wreaths at the graves of veterans at Oakland Rural Cemetery in Youngstown. Normally, they place approximately 30 wreaths at the graves, as part of Wreaths Across America. The project was started in 1992 by Morrill Worcester, the owner of Worcester Wreath Co. of Harrington, Maine. Worcester had a surplus of wreaths left over after the holiday season, so he decided to place the wreaths at the graves of veterans at Arlington National Cemetery.

On Monday, the Wheatfield Town board announced that, although the municipality elected not to opt out of New York State Cannabis Law Section 131 - which would have flatly prevented marijuana retail sales and on-site consumption establishments from operating - due to a lack of specifics from the state. It will go forward with its own regulations regarding where and how such establishments could operate.

New York Attorney General Letitia James recently issued a consumer alert to New Yorkers concerning potential price-gouging of over-the-counter coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) testing products for at-home use, as well as other in-demand essential products. This alert, her office stated, "comes in light of a surge of COVID-19 cases due to the omicron variant, which has resulted in the rise of New Yorkers seeking to use at-home testing kits before gathering with friends and loved ones for the holidays."

The highly transmissible omicron variant of the novel coronavirus has been detected in Erie County, University at Buffalo scientists and Erie County health officials reported Wednesday. The variant was found in virus samples, analyzed by a UB team that has been sequencing the virus in the region, of Western New Yorkers who tested positive this month.
