For a third year - and a second year during a pandemic - New York state and Erie County are recognizing Oct. 25-31 as PrEP Aware Week. This observance gives community organizations, health care clinics, schools and public health departments the chance to raise awareness about HIV PrEP. The theme for 2021, "My PrEP," features community ambassadors who are sharing their PrEP story and why PrEP is significant to them.

New York drivers need to buck up this fall and watch for animals on the roads. AAA analyzed New York crash data and found that October, November and December are by far the peak months for animal crashes, notably deer, in the Empire State. There were 33,956 animal-related crashes statewide in 2020 - the second-highest level in the past decade - that's equivalent to one animal-related crash every 16 minutes.

Gov. Kathy Hochul recently signed legislation allowing employees facing potential layoff to petition employers to participate in a shared work program. Under this amendment to labor law, the majority of employees may submit a request for a shared work program in writing to the employer before the layoff or within 10 days of the layoff.

Gov. Kathy Hochul recently signed legislation (S.191/A.5459) authorizing credit unions to participate in the Excelsior Linked Deposit. Her team said, "In the past 35 years as New York has shifted from a manufacturing to a service economy, some of the largest companies in the state have downsized, forcing many individuals to become self-employed. Credit unions have responded to the needs of their members and communities by offering business loans."

The Buffalo Music Hall of Fame partnered with Music To Remember WNY, Bridget's Battle Foundation and WNY Drummers for Homeless People for a "3 For a Cause" fundraising event over the summer. The response and community outreach was so great, these organizations have decided to keep their music and mission flowing.

Zach Williams' first full-length Christmas album, "I Don't Want Christmas To End," released Friday (Provident Label Group/Sony Music). Featuring his penned title track and classics "Christmas Time Is Here" and "This Christmas," Williams goes all out with his southern rock mastery with songs such as "Merry Christmas Baby' and "Run Run Rudolph." The 10-track project, produced by Jonathan Smith, was recorded at the legendary FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
