As part of National Drive Electric Week 2021, Erie County is spreading the word about environmental responsibility and encouraging residents to learn more about electric vehicles by signing a proclamation that declares Sept. 25 to Oct. 3 "Drive Electric Week" in Erie County.

The New York State Office for New Americans (ONA) and CanCodeCommunities announced the opening of registration for the fall 2021 session of digital literacy training. Known as NewAmericansCanCode, the program provides digital literacy training to assist newcomers to New York in gaining basic computer skills.

With the start of the fall semester, Villa Maria College delivered books and supplies to students at no additional cost outside of tuition. CollegeBoard estimates this change saves students and their families an average of $1,240 in out-of-pocket costs per year. The college launched this effort to help make school more affordable and easier to navigate for all students.

Batavia Downs Gaming & Hotel announced Batavia Downs will host its famous wiener dog races on Sunday, Oct. 17. While there is no live harness racing that day, a different type of racing will go on at Batavia's historic track. At 3 p.m., up to 80 dachshunds will race for the crown of fastest wiener dog in Western New York.

The newly remodeled Brickyard Brewing Company was the scene, Saturday night, for the return of "Lewiston Jeopardy!" - a beer and pizza fundraiser for the Historical Association of Lewiston. Fans filled the second-floor banquet room to watch four rounds of questions (plus the all-important final question) while also competing for raffle tickets and other prizes during the "commercials." This event - canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions limiting gatherings - raised more than $1,000 for HAL.

The Office of Head Start (OHS) has awarded the Community Action Organization of WNY Inc. a $77.1 million grant over five years to provide Head Start and Early Head Start programming to 1,080 Head Start students and 205 infants, toddlers and pregnant women in Erie County. Holy Cross Head Start Inc., formerly a delegate of CAO since 1969, was also awarded a portion of the Erie County grant and will now serve the community as a Grantee agency alongside CAO. Holy Cross was awarded $25 million over five years, serving 500 Head Start children.
