Erie County Commissioner of Health Dr. Gale Burstein and representatives from the Erie County Department of Health Office of Epidemiology met Monday with a group of school leaders from rural, suburban and urban school districts, including Erie 1 BOCES and Erie 2 BOCES. The purpose of this meeting was to hear about school leaders' experiences with COVID-19 health and safety guidance during the last school year and this summer.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos recently announced hunting and trapping licenses and deer management permits (DMPs) for the 2021-22 seasons are on sale. In addition, DEC announced new opportunities for hunters this year, including expanded hunting seasons and allowing youth ages 12 and 13 to hunt deer with a firearm or crossbow in upstate counties that have passed a local low and "opted in" to participate.

There's no need for cyclists to worry about a breakdown or mechanical issue at this weekend's "Ride for Roswell." AAA Western and Central New York crews will be on hand during the event to assist cyclists. Four AAA trucks will be stationed at three locations throughout the ride in the event of a breakdown. AAA roadside technicians will shuttle bikes and riders to a nearby rest stop or bike shop, back to the University at Buffalo location, or will refill flat tires with air on-site.

The Grand Island Town Board Monday night passed a $750,000 bond resolution to fund reconstruction and improvements to various town roads. The resolution, sponsored by Michael Madigan and seconded by Tom Digati, passed unanimously. Councilmember Peter Marston was an excused absence.

The Erie County Department of Health is providing an update on COVID-19 data. For the week ending July 31, ECDOH received reports for 535 new COVID-19 cases among Erie County residents; this is an 80% increase from the previous week's total of 297 cases, and a 10-fold increase in the past six weeks.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Monday announced the sixth funding round of his Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative, which will provide up to $35 million in service and operating funds for at least 1,400 supportive housing units. Since its creation in 2016, ESSHI has provided operating funds for more than 5,400 units of supportive housing.
