Cuomo announces $200 million in food assistance for July

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday announced all New Yorkers enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will receive the maximum allowable level of food benefits for July. The agency is also working with the federal government to ensure this aid, which has brought in more than $2.5 billion in food assistance to New Yorkers since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, will continue beyond July.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday signed legislation (S.3812/A.436) that repeals provisions of law prohibiting the practice of barbering on Sunday. Though rarely enforced, there had been a law on the books making it a misdemeanor to cut hair or provide a shave to another person on Sunday.
Attorney General James calls on federal regulators to improve child car seat safety standards

New York Attorney General Letitia James on Tuesday co-led a coalition of 18 attorneys general in calling on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to take stronger measures to protect children while traveling in car seats. NHTSA is the federal agency within the U.S. Department of Transportation that regulates child car seats.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday signed legislation (S.3941/A.6040) expanding New York state's definition of telemarketing to include marketing by text message. New Yorkers have protection against unwanted robocalls under state law, but texting was not previously defined as telemarketing, exempting it from those protections. This legislation closes that loophole.

The AAA family is deeply saddened by the death of one of our drivers over Independence Day weekend. 32-year-old Glenn Ewing was placing a AAA member's vehicle on the back of a tow truck when he was hit by a passing vehicle. Glenn's death underscores why "Slow Down, Move Over" laws are critical to safety and drivers must slow down, and move over into the next lane, if they can do so safely.

The Diocese of Buffalo recently became aware of an action brought pursuant to the Child Victims Act by an individual who alleges she was abused as a child in the early 1980s at parish of St. Matthew by Rev. Msgr. Leo McCarthy (88), a retired priest of the Diocese of Buffalo, who continues to assist in parish ministry. The complaint was not served on the diocese, but was discovered during a recent search of publicly filed complaints.
