As we pass the year anniversary (I guess you can call it that) of COVID-19 shutting the nation down, I have continually looked back and asked myself, "Has anything good came out of this pandemic?"

Earlier this week, all of Western New York's Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) together called on New York to reverse or delay the 340B "carve out" included in the 2021 state budget, which is currently being negotiated. The 340B "carve out," they said, "would mean a devastating loss in funding for the region's most vulnerable and traditionally marginalized patients, which include communities of color, individuals living with HIV, refugees and the LGBTQ+ community."

The Legal Aid Society has filed a lawsuit in New York State Supreme Court against New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New York State Health Commissioner Howard Zucker on behalf of three persons incarcerated in New York state prisons, "demanding the state grant people in custody the same access to the COVID-19 vaccine that has been afforded others in virtually every other congregate residential setting - settings which by their very nature place individuals at high risk for contracting and transmitting the virus that causes COVID-19."

The Taste of Buffalo presented by Tops is now accepting applications for its annual scholarship program to support Western New York-area high school seniors aspiring to careers in the foodservice and hospitality industries. This year's program will award four recipients with a $500 scholarship to be applied toward nontuition expenses, such as room, board, books and fees.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday announced appointments are now available at 10 new state-run mass-vaccination sites across the state, including The Conference & Event Center Niagara Falls at 101 Old Falls St. All 10 sites will open Friday, March 19, and will operate from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Each site will have the ability to vaccinate more than 1,000 New Yorkers daily, dependent on supply from the federal government.
