Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday announced four additional New York companies and one company that has previously received state support will be awarded nearly $2 million in state support to produce supplies to help combat the COVID-19 pandemic. These grant funds will help alleviate product shortages due to supply chain issues that could lead to unfair pricing practices.

With 86% of Black tobacco users in New York state addicted to menthol cigarettes and the tobacco industry continuing to heavily market these products in urban neighborhoods, the odds appear stacked against the Black population to become tobacco-free. Fortunately, most want to quit and plenty of free resources are available, including individualized support through the Submitted by the New York State Smokers' Quitline.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday updated New Yorkers on the state's vaccination program. As of noon, New York's health care distribution sites have received 1,554,450 first doses and already administered 91% (1,414,241) first-dose vaccinations and 76% of first and second doses. Delivery of the week 8 allocation from the federal government begins mid-week.

The New York State Department of Labor announced it has identified over 425,000 fraudulent unemployment benefit claims during the COVID-19 pandemic, preventing fraudsters from stealing more than $5.5 billion in benefits. The DOL has referred hundreds of thousands of fraud cases to federal prosecutors, and continues to work with law enforcement partners on the federal, state and local level to hold fraudsters accountable.

Local government sales tax collections declined by 10% overall in 2020, or $1.8 billion, compared to the previous year, according to a report issued by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. This decline was steeper than the drop during the Great Recession, when local sales tax collections fell 6% statewide in 2009 compared to 2008.

The independent Rochester auditing firm of StoneBridge Business Partners has conducted a thorough audit of the policies and protocols of the Diocese of Buffalo with regard to training, reporting and ensuring safe environments for young people according the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' mandated Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. It found the diocese to be in full compliance. The audit covers the period of 2019 to 2020.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded $2.5 billion to renew support to thousands of local homeless assistance programs across the nation. HUD's Continuum of Care (CoC) grants will provide critically needed support to 6,597 local programs on the front lines of serving individuals and families experiencing homelessness. Local homeless assistance programs in New York were awarded nearly $246 million.
