DiNapoli: Statewide local sales tax collections decline 5.2% in October

Local government sales tax revenue declined by 5.2% in October compared to the same month last year, according to State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. October's sales tax collections totaled $1.4 billion for counties and cities, or $74.4 million less than in October 2019.
Ransomville Speedway completes facility upgrades

While nary a lap was turned at Ransomville Speedway in 2020, that didn't mean the facility laid dormant during the last few months. Speedway management used the extended offseason to complete some needed upgrades to the facility that will have it ready to come back to life even better in 2021.
NYSEG, RG&E continue response effort as strong winds impacted service areas overnight & during early morning hours

NYSEG and RG&E crews are responding as strong winds and thunderstorms continue to disrupt service to thousands of customers across the state. Currently, there are 20,321 NYSEG customers and 529 RG&E customers without power of the approximately 54,000 and 22,000 impacted respectively.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos recently announced the start of DEC's annual Arbor Day original artwork poster contest. Each year, DEC's Urban and Community Forestry Program commemorates Arbor Day with a poster contest that invites the public to submit original photos and artwork that "celebrate the immeasurable value of trees - ecologically, environmentally, aesthetically and socially."

Restaino explained the issues that have held up the budget, including but not limited to the COVID-19 pandemic. He also outlined what is expected within the budget and the intended plans to continue moving this process forward to approve the budget with City Council.

Niagara County Department of Health reports rabid raccoon in Town of Newfane

The Niagara County Department of Health confirmed a rabid raccoon near Lake Road and Phillips Road, Town of Newfane, on Thursday. A hunter was attacked by the raccoon before killing it on Nov. 7. NCDOH submitted the animal for testing to the NYSDOH Wadsworth Center, Griffon Laboratory. The hunter will coordinate with the Department of Health's nursing division to receive post-exposure rabies prophylaxis.

Hope arises for bettering the boulevard

When the first South Grand Island Bridge was constructed in 1935, connecting Tonawanda with Niagara Falls, the New York State Thruway Highway 190 did not exist. Travelers heading north used Grand Island Boulevard as its primary thoroughfare, according to Supervisor John C. Whitney. That is why the former bustling Niagara Falls Visitor Center was built at the corner of Grand Island Boulevard and Staley Road - and why there are so many motels along the boulevard.
