As Daylight Saving Time comes to an end, the Firemen's Association of the State of New York (FASNY) is reminding all New Yorkers to check the batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. They should also clean those units and test them to insure they are working. Alarms equipped with removable batteries should have them replaced.

Voter participation for school district budgets statewide more than tripled to 1.6 million votes cast amid the COVID-19 lockdown for the 2020-21 school budget year, after in-person voting was temporarily suspended and replaced with absentee ballots. The results were similar to 2019 when only 1.6% of the budgets failed to pass on the first vote, according to a report released by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli.

As children take to the streets on Halloween to trick-or-treat, their risk of being injured by motorists increases greatly. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports Halloween is consistently one of the top three days for pedestrian injuries and fatalities, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates children are four times more likely to be struck by a motor vehicle on Halloween than any other day of the year.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday announced California was added to New York state's COVID-19 travel advisory. No areas were removed. The advisory requires individuals who have traveled to New York from areas with significant community spread to quarantine for 14 days. The quarantine applies to any person arriving from an area with a positive test rate higher than 10 per 100,000 residents over a seven-day rolling average, or an area with a 10% or higher positivity rate over a seven-day rolling average.

Scams related to online purchases, already on the rise, spiked more at the start of the pandemic, according to new research by the Better Business Bureau (BBB). A staggering 80.5% of people reporting online purchase scams in 2020 lost money. Which is a jump from 71.2% in 2015, when BBB began collecting data.

Tom Reubens, a graduate of the Wilson Central School District (Class of 2007), was an All-State athlete and scholar, with a great love of history and nature. His life was cut short by a little known cardiac illness called Brugada syndrome. In his honor, the Reubens family has created a scholarship to support student athletes, and Niagara Family Medicine Associates has donated a tree that was planted at Wilson Elementary School last Friday.
