The Niagara County Sheriff's Office is currently searching for a lost woman described as white, elderly, 86 years old. She is believed to be in a wooded area near her 2000 gold Mercury Sable 4-door. She was last seen wearing a white sweater and tan pants.

Local government sales tax revenue declined by 7.8% in August compared to the same period last year, according to State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. August's sales tax collections totaled $1.3 billion for counties and cities, or $111 million less than in August 2019.

Independence Express, the transportation branch of Western New York Independent Living Inc. will provide free van rides to people with disabilities living in Erie, Niagara, Genesee, Orleans and Wyoming counties who need a ride to vote on Election Day (Tuesday, Nov. 3). Or, if one would prefer to cast a vote prior to Election Day, one can get a ride to a designated early voting site in their county during its limited hours of operation between Oct. 24 and Nov. 1.

Speaking to the press on Monday morning, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Western New York is making progress toward lowering its number of daily positive coronavirus cases. Throughout the summer, this region was among the highest in daily percentage, crossing 2% on several occasions. The governor has said the infection rate is manageable at 1% or lower.

A special youth-only pheasant hunting weekend will be held in Western New York on Oct. 10-11, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced. The hunt will occur one week prior to the regular pheasant hunting season and enables junior hunters (ages 12-15 years old) to hunt pheasants with a licensed adult companion. The 2020-21 regular pheasant season opens Oct. 17.

It's fall, and influenza (flu) season is here again. The flu is a respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat and lungs. The virus spreads mainly from person to person through droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. The virus also may spread when people touch something with flu virus on it and then touch their eyes, nose or mouth. Flu can cause severe illness, hospitalization and death. Anyone can get the flu, and serious problems can occur at any age.

United Way of Greater Niagara (UWGN) on Friday announced the launch of its 2020 campaign, with Nicolas Maniccia (KeyBank) and Denise Abbott (DeGraff Medical Park) as this year's campaign co-chairs. New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced DEC will begin enforcement of the state's ban on single-use plastic carryout bags on Oct. 19. The plastic bag ban, which went into effect on March 1, was not enforced per an agreement between the parties in a lawsuit brought by Poly-Pak Industries Inc., et al, in New York State Supreme Court.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced law enforcement agencies throughout the state issued 3,262 tickets for impaired driving during the STOP-DWI "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign, which ran from Aug. 19 through Sept. 7. During that time, officers also issued 116,292 tickets for other vehicle and traffic law violations, such as speeding and distracted driving.
