Foodborne pathogens are very common and usually benign, but certain virulent strains of pathogens can result in severe disease and even death. Distinguishing specific strains of pathogens can help scientists better understand them and develop biomarkers to help detect them in patients, expediting diagnosis and treatment.

Community Action Organization of Western New York President and CEO L. Nathan Hare has announced plans to retire after serving the antipoverty agency for 18 years. Hare will continue in his post until CAO's board, led by the Hon. Craig D. Hannah, completes a national search for his successor. The board has retained Catapult Executive Consulting of Buffalo to assist with the search.

The University at Buffalo learned Tuesday that 22 off-campus students tested positive for COVID-19 and are in isolation. This brings the total number of confirmed cases within the UB community to 27, including one employee, since Aug. 21 when the first cases were reported.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday announced the launch of New York's absentee ballot portal where voters can directly request an absentee ballot for the upcoming Nov. 3 election. The governor acted by executive order to allow any voter concerned about risk or exposure to COVID-19 during the ongoing pandemic to request an absentee ballot.

In mid-July, Catholic Health and its foundations were notified by a third-party software vendor, Blackbaud Inc., of a cyber security breach that impacted the health system and other nonprofit organizations locally and throughout the country. The breach, which was part of a potential donor data base, included the names, medical record numbers, and dates of service for patients who received care in Catholic Health from 2016 through May of this year.

Major as the newest employee of its Independence Express (IE) transportation division, where she will be among the drivers of its fleet of wheelchair-lift equipped vans and minivans for those without mobility impairments. Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday reminded New Yorkers of the availability of free COVID-19 testing in Oneonta and Western New York. Three new temporary rapid testing sites will open in the City of Oneonta, Otsego County, tomorrow at 11 a.m. After tomorrow, the sites will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.
