Supporters from across New York state and the country are participating in "March On for Brain Injury" on Saturday, Sept. 12, an annual event hosted by the Brain Injury Association of New York State (BIANYS). Normally, hundreds of walkers gather in four locations around the state for a day of fun and activity, but this year the event will be completely online so everyone can stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gov. Cuomo signed a new law Monday, which goes into effect Nov. 1, requiring all passengers to wear a seat belt in the back seat of a motor vehicle, including passengers of ride sharing services like Uber and Lyft. Until now, passengers over age 16 were not required to wear seat belts in the rear seat in New York. The new law, championed by AAA New York state, will save lives and prevent injuries across state roadways by requiring all occupants in a motor vehicle to buckle up.

Hospitalizations related to COVID-19 in New York peaked in mid-April at almost 19,000 with more than 5,200 people in intensive care units (ICU) across the state. New York and its hospital system took a number of steps to begin preparing to handle the projected surge in hospital admissions related to COVID-19.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday announced two additional states and the Virgin Islands meet the metrics to qualify for the travel advisory requiring individuals who have traveled to New York from those areas - all of which have significant community spread - to quarantine for 14 days. The newly added states are Hawaii and South Dakota.

Andrew Cuomo signed legislation today (S6172/A7331) prohibiting housing providers from discriminating against a person who relies on an animal for assistance alleviating symptoms or the effects of a disability. Housing providers must now provide "a reasonable accommodation by permitting a support animal to live in a home that otherwise would have prohibited pets."

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday signed legislation (S.4336/A.6163) requiring all passengers in motor vehicles over the age of 16 to wear a seat belt. Currently, passengers aged 16 and older are only required to wear a seat belt in the front passenger seat next to the driver.
