Independent Living of Niagara County to hold 'Walk, Run & Roll Virtual 5K & 10K' race

Independent Living of Niagara County (ILNC) is holding its first "Walk, Run & Roll Virtual 5K & 10K" 2020 race. Entrants can participate anytime during the month of August, and choose the venue that they feel is safe - say, traveling around a building, around the block, up and down the hall, etc.

Congressman Brian Higgins, D-NY-26, announced the House of Representatives approved H.R. 6395, the fiscal year 2021 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), a bill providing funding for the nation's military bases, research and operations. The legislation includes a maritime heritage amendment submitted by Higgins, as well as measures related to COVID-19 response suggested in Higgins' pandemic preparedness bill.

Erie County District Attorney John Flynn announced all assistant district attorneys in his office will complete an implicit bias training course. The session will be provided virtually Wednesday afternoon by Buffalo City Court Judge Hon. Lenora Foote-Beavers to all prosecutors and confidential criminal investigators in the Erie County District Attorney's Office, as well as public defenders from the Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday announced the largest combined clean energy solicitations ever issued in the U.S., seeking up to 4,000 megawatts of renewable capacity to combat climate change. New York's second offshore wind solicitation seeks up to 2,500 megawatts of projects, the largest in the nation's history, in addition to last year's solicitation, which resulted in nearly 1,700 megawatts awarded.

As lawmakers consider additional legislation to address the ongoing health crisis and economic fallout from COVID-19, the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) sent a letter to Congress calling for additional help in several areas, including extending the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) for severely impacted businesses and their employees, creating targeted lending facilities and liquidity measures to help hoteliers meet debt service, and passing tax reforms to benefit both hotel employees and employers. Together, these provisions would help ensure hotels can retain and rehire employees, protect employees and guests, keep hotel doors open, and incentivize Americans to travel again when it's safe.

As the province has announced, casinos are permitted to reopen in stage three, but with significant restrictions in place. We are currently reviewing the reopening requirements and how the capacity restrictions will impact the reopening of our casino properties. For this reason, Fallsview Casino Resort and Casino Niagara will not be reopening on Friday, July 24.
Some assisted living communities forced to put visitation on hold

On July 10, the New York Department of Health issued a health advisory allowing for limited visitation to begin for assisted living communities. Eager to reunite residents with their loved ones, ESAAL immediately began working with its 300 members to begin implementing all of the previsitation requirements, including submitting a safety plan to the New York State Department of Health and developing a formal visitation plan to share with families and the public.

Erie County receiving federal assistance to mitigate impacts of COVID-19

The Erie County Department of Environment and Planning announced $1.5 million in Emergency Solutions Grant ("ESG") funds from the federal CARES Act is coming to Erie County to be used for emergency shelter services for the homeless and potentially homeless populations, along with $320,000 in federal Community Development Block Grant ("CDBG") funding from the federal CARES Act for local food pantry assistance, allowing much greater outreach into many of Erie County's rural areas.

The sites, located in Temple of Glory Community Church and Kingdom Life Christian Fellowship, will provide up to 500 tests per day. Both sites are located in highly impacted minority communities. The governor made today's announcement with Savannah Mayor Van R. Johnson II.

The New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS) announced the launch of a new fentanyl campaign designed to prevent overdose deaths and empower the public with information needed to help save lives. The statewide "Prevent Overdose" campaign will run for four weeks and is designed to raise awareness about the perilous dangers of mixing fentanyl with illicit drugs such as counterfeit prescription pills, heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine (both powder and crack), ecstasy and others.

Arts Services Initiative of Western New York Inc. recently announced it awarded a total of 154 emergency grants - amounting to $235,640 total - through its WNY Arts Emergency Relief Fund. The fund, which opened on May 1, in response to COVID-19's devastating impact on Western New York's arts and cultural sector, supported 86 of the region's arts and cultural organizations and 68 of its individual artists, with the average grant amount of $2,262 per organization and $642 per individual.

Donning hard hats and shovels, local officials joined administrators from the Niagara County SPCA for a groundbreaking ceremony Friday, as the organization gets set to begin construction on a $1.5 million state-of-the-art surgical suite. The end result will be a 2,000-square-foot facility complete with an X-ray room, which the SPCA said it's never had before.

Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Niagara County Community College has decided to postpone its 30th annual Foundation Scholarship Gala. The event, originally scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute, will now be held in spring 2021. No official date has been set at this time.
