WNY STEM Hub announces openings for 'Hand in Hand Powered by AT&T' summer program

WNY STEM Hub and AT&T are currently seeking 39 public school students from across Western New York entering grades 6-12 to participate in the free science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) "Hand in Hand Powered by AT&T" summer program where they will create prosthetic hands for local youth and area veterans.

Congressman Brian Higgins announced the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), through a partnership with the Great Lakes Commission and Buffalo Urban Development Corp., in collaboration with the City of Buffalo, NYSDEC, Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper and the Wilson Foundation, has authorized a request to provide $1,056,914 in federal funding toward the project transforming Buffalo's Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Centennial Park.

Just in time for grilling season, a new online virtual event, "Chillin' and Grillin,' " is set for July 28, benefiting the Community Action Organization of Western New York (CAO). "Chillin' and Grillin' " is Western New York's first virtual meat and veggie raffle. Funds raised will help CAO continue its programming during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Sunday announced New York veterans who were denied honorable discharges due to their LGBTQ identity can begin submitting applications under The Restoration of Honor Act. This will allow veterans who were denied an honorable discharge because of their sexual orientation or gender identity to have their New York state veterans' benefits restored.

Bob Dylan's new album, "Rough and Rowdy Ways," has debuted in the Top 10 in 14 countries, including No. 1 chart entries in the U.K., Ireland, Norway, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Germany and Switzerland; No. 2 positions in the U.S., Australia, Belgium and Denmark; No. 3 in Sweden; and No. 4 in France and Italy. The album's entry on the U.S. on Billboard's Top 200 is Dylan's highest chart debut in this country since 2009, and marks the artist's 18th studio album to debut in the U.S. Top 10. "Rough And Rowdy Ways" has also debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's top album sales chart.

Cuomo on Friday announced landmarks across the state will be lit in honor of Pride Month and the LGBTQ community, including the spire of One World Trade Center, the Pershing Square viaduct, the Kosciuszko Bridge, the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, the Mid-Hudson Bridge, the marque at the front of Whiteface Lake Placid Olympic Center, the SUNY Central Administration Building, the State Education Building, the Alfred E. Smith Building, Niagara Falls and the State Fair Exposition Center and LED boards featured at the State Fair main gate.

DEC: Additional campgrounds will open July 1 to existing reservations

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced additional DEC campgrounds in the Adirondack and Catskill parks will open on July 1 to existing reservation holders for the 2020 season. To maintain social distancing and reduce the density of facilities and protect visitors, DEC is not accepting additional reservations or walk-in camping for the 2020 season at this time. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the Women's Corporate Leadership Academy is now accepting applications for its first inaugural class this fall. The academy will be a part of SUNY Empire State College, where its programs were developed by faculty and staff. The mission of the Women's Corporate Leadership Academy is to prepare women for executive and board positions, and to work with organizations across New York to improve their gender representation. The governor first proposed the creation of the academy in his State of the State agenda.
