The Niagara County Department of Public Works on Friday announced the launch of a household hazardous waste residential voucher program. Niagara County residents will be able to dispose of up to 50 pounds of acceptable waste at no cost.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Friday signed an executive order - the New York State Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative - requiring local police agencies, including the NYPD, to develop a plan that reinvents and modernizes police strategies and programs in their community based on community input. Each police agency's reform plan must address policies, procedures, practices and deployment, including, but not limited to use of force.

On Friday, Compassion LIVE announced the rescheduled dates for the "Get Out Of Your Head Tour" with Jennie Allen. Also set to feature speaker Jefferson Bethke and worship music from Davy Flowers, the tour will begin Nov. 14 in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and wrap in Rochester on Nov. 22.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced that the traditional harvest season for largemouth and smallmouth bass opens June 20 and closes Nov. 30. In most waters, there is also a catch and release season starting on Dec. 1, and continuing until the start of the regular season, during which anglers can fish for bass using artificial lures. There are special fishing regulations for some waters, and York anglers should check the current fishing regulations guide before heading out to fish.

As social contact restrictions impacting businesses from the coronavirus pandemic continue to lessen, slowly but surely bars and restaurants throughout the River Region are getting back into operations. Currently in place is phase two, allowing for outdoor, on-premises service of food/alcoholic beverages. Phase three will enable the indoor service of food/alcoholic beverages. It is expected to begin locally on Tuesday, June 16.

As Western New York continues to battle the novel coronavirus, Congressman Brian Higgins joined D'Youville College in announcing a federal grant for the college's nursing program. Allocated by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, the grant will give D'Youville $707,983 to help address a shortage of faculty available to educate future nurses.

Secretary to the Governor Melissa DeRosa on Thursday issued a report to Gov. Andrew Cuomo outlining the COVID-19 domestic violence task force's initial recommendations to reimagine New York's approach to services for domestic violence survivors. Cuomo has accepted these recommendations in full and is directing the Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence, along with other sister agencies of the Office of Children and Family Services, the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, the Office of Victim Services, the Division of Criminal Justice Services and the Department of Health, to use these recommendations to update and improve domestic violence services in New York.

Earlier this week, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson announced the allocation of $2.96 billion in Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG) funding to support homeless Americans and individuals at risk of becoming homeless because of hardships such as job loss, wage reduction, or illness due to COVID-19. This funding is in addition to $1 billion of ESG grants announced within a week of President Donald Trump signing the CARES Act.

Earlier this week, the U.S. Small Business Administration announced it's launching its first online Veteran Entrepreneurial Training and Resource Network (VETRN) Streetwise MBA program to New York veteran small business owners and their immediate families beginning in August. U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer and Congressman Brian Higgins announced Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center will receive $600,456 in federal funding to expand telehealth services to Western New Yorkers. The funding, included by Congress in the CARES Act, is distributed through the Federal Communication Commission's COVID-19 telehealth program. Both Schumer and Higgins reached out to the FCC to advocate on behalf of Roswell Park.
