The Lower Niagara Community Survivors group will hold its second annual "RockOut Cancer" fundraising event from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, at the Lewiston Stone House, 755 Center St. Admission to the all-day event includes food donated from the Stone House, Gallo Coal Fire Kitchen, Casa Antica and the Brickyard Brewing Co. Live entertainment for the day is also donated by Vinyl Addiction, The Tower, Mr. Thank You and Different Districts.

Women United of Niagara will host an "Evening with JoAnn Falletta" from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, at the Niagara Falls Country Club, 505 Mountain View Drive, Lewiston. This summer, five teams of University at Buffalo students who didn't know each other from Adam came together in a startup boot camp to develop a medical device to solve the devastating and costly surgical complication of anastomotic leaks. Such leaks, occurring after some colorectal surgeries, are difficult to detect early. The consequences are severe: an ostomy bag, sepsis or even death.

AAA Western and Central New York has kicked off its annual "School's Open - Drive Carefully" campaign as back-to-school season gets underway. AAA's campaign was launched nationally in 1946 to help reduce the number of school-related pedestrian injuries and fatalities. It is now in its 74th year. AAA clubs across the country continue to promote the campaign each fall to remind motorists to watch out for children as they travel to and from school.

The New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) announced the launch of a new educational program to help New Yorkers understand alcohol and drug addiction, including where to find help and services. The program is titled "New Hope, New Life with OASAS," and will help inform New Yorkers about substance use disorders, including the warning signs, resources available, and where to find help. The program is being funded with $500,000 distributed through the federal state opioid response grant.

Those doubters were converted this past weekend, as people were elbow-to-elbow across Center Street, and cars were stacked all the way back to Oxbow Lane at the Lewiston event.
