Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp. on Wednesday unveiled a new website and brand for the Buffalo waterfront: BuffaloWaterfront.com. The website serves as a single online stop that will better inform the public of Canalside and Outer Harbor events and activities, with a goal of drawing more tourism and awareness to Buffalo's waterfront.

May is Mental Health Month, which promotes healthy lifestyle choices and raises awareness about conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Smoking exacerbates treatment for these conditions and affects people with poor mental health disproportionately. The New York State Smokers' Quitline encourages all residents of New York, especially those suffering from chronic mental health conditions, to call 1-866-NY-QUITS (1-866-697-8487) for free resources to become tobacco-free.

The Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo and UB's Clinical Research Institute on Addictions (CRIA) have joined the National Academy of Medicine Action Collaborative on Countering the U.S. Opioid Epidemic, which was announced Tuesday. This joint commitment makes UB one of more than 100 organizations that have joined this national effort.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced the first Saturday in May marks the beginning of the fishing season for several popular coolwater sportfish species, including walleye, northern pike, pickerel and tiger muskellunge. He noted the coolwater conditions of early spring can render walleye and northern pike fishing particularly good, and anglers are encouraged to take advantage of the many opportunities New York has to offer.
