Arts Services Initiative announces 2018 'Give for Greatness' grant awards

Arts Services Initiative of Western New York announced the recipients of the 2018 "Give for Greatness" grants. Twenty-five grants providing general operating support in the amount of $1,000 each will be awarded to cultural organizations across the five counties of Western New York thanks to several fundraising initiatives throughout the year.

UB receives $2.2 million grant to test behavioral therapy as remedy for insomnia in cancer patients

University at Buffalo researchers received a $2.2 million grant from the National Institute of Nursing Research to conduct one of the first studies on the effectiveness of behavioral therapy in treating insomnia among cancer survivors.
Marjim Manor at the Falls debuts

The Winery at Marjim Manor announces the opening of its second location, this one in Niagara Falls. Located on the first floor of the Niagara County Community College Culinary Institute, the branch office will begin by featuring Marjim Manor wines. During the holiday season, it will be open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

NCCC statement regarding bomb threat

This afternoon, Niagara County Community College Public Safety and the Niagara County Sheriff's Office investigated a report of a bomb threat on campus after receiving an email threatening the college.  The investigation concluded there was no threat to the campus.  We have notified our campus community.
Quick thinking students and staff at NCCC save life

On the afternoon of Thursday, Nov. 8, Niagara County Community College Public Safety received a radio transmission regarding a male down in one of the academic buildings on campus.  Upon responding to the call, campus security officers Linda Haner-Mele and Ryan Newton discovered multiple people already on scene assisting with the unresponsive individual.

The Niagara County Sheriff's Office has been awarded a $215,000 grant from the United States Department of Justice's Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS). The grant will assist area schools and the sheriff's office in their efforts to prevent school violence.
Farm structure property tax exemption extended

Recently, the New York State Legislature extended the state's real property tax exemption for structures and buildings essential to agriculture and horticultural use. Previously set to expire at the end of December, the exemption for necessary farming structures has been extended for another decade, until January of 2029.

NCSO K-9 Chief to get donation of body armor

The Niagara County Sheriff's Office K-9 Chief will receive a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from the non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s Inc. K-9 Chief's vest is sponsored by Pam, Corey and Todd Harmon of Lockport and will be embroidered with the sentiment "In memory of Chief Craig C. Harmon." Delivery is expected within eight to 10 weeks.

Niagara County adopts $359M spending plan

Niagara County lawmakers approved a $359 million budget plan Tuesday night, reducing taxes to their lowest level in decades, at $7.01 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. That represents a 1.3 percent cut over last year's tax rate. In addition, the 2019 budget is $628,000 below the state-mandated tax cap. This is the eighth consecutive year the county's budget has been under the New York State property tax cap limit.
