Erie County Fair 5K Run is certified flattest route in Western New York

The annual Erie County Fair 5K Run, presented by Good Health Saunas, returns to the Fairgrounds on Saturday, Aug. 11, with pistol start at 8:30 a.m. This USA Track & Field (USATF) 3.1-mile route has been certified as the flattest route in Western New York.

Today's national average price for a gallon of gasoline is $2.84, which is down 4 cents from last week. One year ago, the price was $2.28. The New York state average is $3, which is down 1 cent from last week. A year ago, the state average was $2.43. AAA Western and Central New York (AAA WCNY) reports the following averages:

"Treasures Under the Tent," a fundraiser for the Niagara History Center, returns Saturday, Aug. 18, with new auction items, fine food and beverages. "Treasures Under the Tent" will offer outdoor dinner with new menu choices from Shamus Restaurant, as well as an auction with new items.
St. Jude Shrine slots annual chicken & rib dinner

St. Jude Shrine of Lewiston will hold its annual chicken and rib barbecue dinner from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5. The dinner includes cheesy potatoes, pasta salad, tossed salad, dessert, ice cream and beverage. The cost is $15 for adults and $8 for children (6-12 years old). Dine in and takeout available, but tickets are presale only.

Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper, the Niagara River Greenway Commission and Beaver Island State Park will host the 13th annual Paddles Up Niagara on Saturday, July 28. Paddlers will have the opportunity to take in the Island scenery, wetlands, heron rookery and an active bald eagle nesting area during the event (from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m.). There is no entry fee for the event, and the community is encouraged to come out and enjoy the water with other paddlers.

U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy Jr. announced Monday that Glen Stacharczyck, 53, of Buffalo, pleaded guilty to RICO conspiracy, before U.S. District Judge Elizabeth A. Wolford. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
