Sports teams in their first year have their struggles at times. Unless you're the Vegas Golden Knights and reach the Stanley Cup Finals in your first season, most teams see varied success. For the Niagara Power of the New York Collegiate Baseball League, it may not be their first year in existence, but it's their inaugural season under the direction of Niagara University.

Old Fort Niagara will host the largest War of 1812 event in its history on July 28-29. The fort was selected by the War of 1812 Grand Tactical Committee to host its biggest annual event, the War of 1812 Grand Encampment, which attracts hundreds of re-enactors from the U.S. and Canada and will feature U.S. and British land forces, naval vessels, personnel and artillery, Native allies, tactical demonstrations and living-history programming. The event is July 28-29.

Valery Lyman, a filmmaker and fellow at the Film Study Center at Harvard University whose viewer-participant approach physically engages an audience with the subjects and landscape of her work, will present her documentary installation, "Breaking Ground," as part of her residency in the University at Buffalo Creative Arts Initiative Aug. 1 to Oct. 10.

The 19th annual Jack Beatty Memorial Cruise and Clambake, held Friday, July 13, continued its tradition of lively entertainment, delicious food and leisurely sailing, all to benefit Niagara Hospice. The event raised a large amount to support the purchase of a new ambulette for Niagara Hospice. A formal check presentation will be in October at Niagara Hospice.

Teal's Niagara Theatre Co. will produce "Rock of Ages" at the Lewiston-Porter High School Performing Arts Center on July 27-28. The show chronicles the love between wannabe rocker Drew and would-be actress Sherrie. Set to a soundtrack featuring the music of Styx, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Steve Perry and Poison, "Rock of Ages" has been called "the jukebox musical that will melt your face off."

The 179th Erie County Fair will see the debut of a newly created exhibit area with the goal of exciting Western New Yorker's about technology, engineering and the sciences. "I-Hub at the Fair," with the "I" standing for "innovation, imagination & ingenuity," will be located inside the fair's Showplace Building. The display will focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) businesses and education through daily demonstrations, interactive displays and hands-on activities.

The Lewiston Veterans of Foreign Wars has released its new coin commemorating the future "Circle of Honor." BMG on Monday announced a new partnership with the acclaimed television music series "Live From Daryl's House." The agreement includes worldwide rights to the complete 82-episode collection filmed from 2007-16. New York forest rangers responded to several smaller wildland fires during the past week. These were either the result of careless campfires or lightning strikes. Due to the dry conditions that prevail throughout most of the state, forest rangers remind people to be careful with fires or ignition devices. It is unlawful to leave a campfire unattended or unextinguished, and to set any fire that may endanger the property of another.
