On Sunday, more than 200 runners and walkers participated in the third annual Father Baker Father's Day 5K. The day brought avid runners, families and businesses to South Park Lake to run or walk the 3.1 miles around the park and Botanical Gardens.

In honor of Father's Day, Toni Cornell released a new cover of Prince's "Nothing Compares to U" that she recorded with her father, Chris Cornell, before his untimely death last May. On the eve of World Refugee Day (June 20), Toni pledges to donate her proceeds from the song to the International Rescue Committee, just as Chris did with the proceeds from "The Promise," his final music video.

The American Cancer Society, the largest non-government, not-for-profit funding source of cancer research in the U.S., has approved funding for two grants totaling $832,000 to researchers in upstate New York in the first of two grant cycles for 2018. The grants are among 110 national research and training grants totaling more than $47.6 million that will fund investigators at 72 institutions across the country in the latest round of funding.

When the Buffalo Bills begin the 2018 schedule with the Aug. 9 preseason opener, club seat members will have an amplified experience at New Era Field. Sunnking, an electronics recycling company based in Brockport, presented 30 refurbished laptops to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Buffalo. When Sunnking heard the news $32,550 worth of tablet computers were stolen after a vendor failed deliver them to the Boys & Girls Clubs, Sunnking stepped in to provide replacements. The gift will be used for children attending the Boys & Girls Clubs.

Domestic violence is a crime that "is all about power and control," said Mary Travers Murphy, executive director of the Family Justice Center, speaking at the FJC's annual fundraising breakfast on June 8. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, "domestic violence is an epidemic affecting individuals in every community, regardless of age, economic status, sexual orientation, gender, race, religion or nationality." One of those communities is Grand Island.

The man for whom Lewiston was named received his own monument on Thursday, as the Village of Lewiston officially unwrapped the Morgan Lewis bust inside the International Peace Garden. Acclaimed sculptor Susan Geissler created the artwork - her third monument in Lewiston, joining the Tuscarora Heroes (Center Street) and Freedom Crossing (Water Street).
