NCCC Alumni Association to host 5K run/walk

The Niagara County Community College Alumni Association will host its 20th annual 5K run/walk on Friday, May 4, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The course is USA Track and Field certified and features a fast, flat route around the scenic NCCC campus in Sanborn. The event is open to the public, alumni, faculty, staff and students.

Mackenzie Quider has a huge role for the Niagara-Wheatfield softball team. Not only does she pitch in the circle for the Falcons, she hits fourth in a strong lineup. On Tuesday evening, she showed exactly what she's capable of. The Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons defeated the Grand Island Vikings in Niagara Frontier League play, 3-2. The game was the first home game of the year for the Falcons due to dreary April weather.

The Niagara Falls Community Development department will host the 2018 Niagara Falls Home Ownership Auction at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, in the City Hall Council Chambers. The auction will feature 10 homes the City of Niagara Falls owns due to recent tax foreclosure. It serves as an alternative to the standard IN-REM tax foreclosure auction.

This past weekend, the NFL held its annual draft, selecting over 200 players from college programs across the nation. Lucas Gravelle's name wasn't called, but the Niagara-Wheatfield High School alum will still get a chance to play in the NFL. Gravelle was signed by the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent.

Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced May 5 marks the opening of the fishing season for many of New York's most popular sportfish, including walleye, northern pike, pickerel and tiger muskellunge. Fishing for these species, especially walleye and pike, can be especially good in cooler periods of early spring, and anglers are encouraged to take advantage of the fishing opportunities across the state.

Chris Jacobs partnered with AT&T and Better Business Bureau of Upstate New York to host a free senior scam prevention and cyber security seminar on Friday at the Grand Island Golden Age Center. The event was free and open to the public. It was part of a series of senior events held statewide. More than 75 senior citizens attended the event.

Higgins announces House approval of 5-year FAA reauthorization

On Friday, Congressman Brian Higgins (D-NY-26) and his colleagues in the House of Representatives voted (393-13) to approve the Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act of 2018 (H.R.4). The bill funds the FAA at $104.17 billion annually through 2023.

On March 22, Grand Island resident Paul Leuchner met with I National Aeronautics and Space Administration officials at their Glenn Research Center in Cleveland to take temporary possession of a lunar rock sample from the 1971 Apollo 15 mission. The sample, encased in a solid pyramid of clear Lucite, was being loaned to the Buffalo Geological Society for display at its annual gem and mineral show that weekend.

NBC Sports' coverage of the first round of the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs across the networks of NBCUniversal averaged a total audience delivery (TAD) of 769,000 viewers, its best first round viewership in six years. Wednesday night's Game 7 between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins averaged a TAD of 1.484 million viewers, making it the best first round game ever on NBCSN.
