Faculty members from the University at Buffalo's School of Social Work (UB SSW) will join colleagues from 10 SUNY campuses in various disciplines, and five not-for-profit organizations to work on an innovative project to create a sustainable village and learning community in the town of Arcahaie, Haiti.

The Lewiston Police Department announced Monday it is in receipt of 24 new tactical ballistic vests. Each vest contains a metal plate, weighs close to 30 pounds, and is rated level IV, which is the highest level of protective gear.

The Firemen's Association of the State of New York announced it has been awarded a $1.5 million federal grant to recruit new volunteer firefighters. The four-year Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant is awarded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The funding will be used to create statewide outreach campaigns, awareness programs and recruitment and retention activities.

After 18 years of service to the Erie County Agricultural Society, Dennis "Denny" Lang has announced he is stepping down from his position as CEO and fair manager effective Sept. 29. Lang will continue to act as a member of the society's board of directors.

At the end of the 2016 tennis season, the Niagara-Wheatfield girls tennis team found themselves in second place, finishing 12-2 and one match behind Niagara Frontier League champion, Lockport. This season, the Falcons have used that finish as fuel to their fire.
The Falcons have been nothing short of dominant in their first eight matches of the year, as they are 8-0 and 40-0 in sets.

During World War II, America's railroads helped to defeat the Axis by moving millions of tons of raw materials, wartime goods and massive numbers of troops. As America's second-largest railroad hub and a key producer of aircraft, vehicles and other critical wartime supplies, Buffalo's homefront efforts and successes were tied to trains. More important than supplies, railroads transported parents, grandparents and relatives far away from home to boot camp, training bases and eventually off to war.

The Village of Lewiston is one step closer to an updated local waterfront revitalization program after the Board of Trustees voted Monday to issue a negative declaration on the State Environmental Quality Review related to the LWRP. The board's stated goal is to include more of the village in the program, so as to have the municipality qualify for New York State Department of State grants.

Congressman Brian Higgins announced Friday federal grants totaling $356,000 to support the growth of small businesses and jobs in Western New York. The federal funding is allocated through the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Community Development Financial Institutions Fund.
