Devil's Hole stairs to be replaced

Beginning Monday, July 17, the stairs into the Niagara Gorge at Devil's Hole State Park will be closed as work begins to replace them. The stairs are expected to be closed through the spring of 2018.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation on Tuesday announced that results of recent soil sampling conducted at properties adjacent to the former Niagara Sanitation Landfill in the Town of Wheatfield confirm no contamination from the landfill is impacting surface soils on nearby properties.

Higgins: More than $2 million in grant awards to Roswell Park researchers to study breast cancer recurrence, develop melanoma drug

Two researchers at Roswell Park Cancer Institute recently received grants totaling more than $2 million ($2,420,152) from the National Cancer Institute to investigate an underlying cause of why some breast cancers recur and to develop a new treatment for melanoma.
Tuscarora Princess crowned

A new princess was crowned at the annual Tuscarora Picnic, which has occurred for 172 years. Quinna Hamby of the Turtle Clan took the title. She recently graduated from Niagara-Wheatfield High School, where she was active in sports such as cross-country, lacrosse and basketball.

Empire State Development on Monday announced the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Graycliff Estate in Derby is to receive $3.7 million in Buffalo Billion phase two funding to fully bring the property back to its 1931 condition. The $4,047,000 project will include complete interior restoration of the Isabelle Martin House and the Foster House, landscaping improvements and rebuilding beach access.

'A History of the Funnies' at Carnegie Art Center

Beginning Saturday, July 22, the Carnegie Art Center in North Tonawanda will host a month-long exhibition of original cartoon and comic art: "A History of the Funnies: 1880s-2000s." Approximately 150 pieces will be on display, comprehensively chronicling over a century of comic art history as a memorial to local physician Maurie Dewey. The exhibition will run through Aug. 19.
