When people think about museums, they often think about what hangs on the walls. At the Castellani Art Museum, we think just as much about what happens between them.

Every exhibition, school tour, public program, artist talk, and community gathering is an opportunity to bring people together – to spark conversation, encourage curiosity, and create meaningful connections through art. While the artwork may be what first draws someone through our doors, it’s the people who give the museum its purpose.

That belief has shaped everything we do at CAM.

Over the past year, we’ve welcomed exhibitions that explore American identity, the environment, digital art, and contemporary artistic practice. We’ve expanded educational programming for students and families, reimagined our museum gift shop, launched new issues of The CAM Magazine, and continued caring for a permanent collection that belongs to our entire community. None of this happens in isolation. It happens because people throughout our region believe that access to art enriches lives.

Museums are often thought of as places that preserve the past. While that is certainly part of our mission, they are equally places that help shape the future. They encourage dialogue, inspire creativity, and invite us to see familiar ideas – and one another – from new perspectives.

As we look ahead to the fall season, we’re excited to continue creating opportunities for our community to gather, learn and be inspired. On Oct. 8, CAM will open three new exhibitions – “Sasha Stiles: STANZA,” “Joel Mulindwa: finding rest,” and “From Decay to Display: Conserved Works from the Collection” – each offering a unique perspective on language, humanity, and the preservation of our shared cultural heritage.

The conversations won’t stop at the gallery walls. This fall’s programs include a live performance of historic Niagara Falls sheet music from CAM’s collection in collaboration with the Lewiston Council on the Arts; continuing “Art of Mindfulness,” led by Mitch Alegre; “Yoga @ CAM” led by Full Circle Mind and Body of Lewiston; an off-site conversation exploring art conservation at Lewiston’s historic Red Brick School; and our second annual Holiday Art Market celebrating local artists and makers. Whether you’re looking for a thoughtful discussion, a creative experience, or simply a reason to spend time with family and friends, we hope you’ll find it at CAM.

As we begin our new collaboration with Niagara Frontier Publications, we’re equally excited to bring these stories beyond the museum. Local journalism and local arts organizations share a common purpose: strengthening communities by celebrating the people, places and ideas that shape them. Together, we look forward to highlighting the artists, educators, students, volunteers and neighbors whose creativity enriches the River Region, Niagara County, and Grand Island communities.

Whether you’re a longtime museum supporter or planning your very first visit, I invite you to stop by. Explore an exhibition. Attend a program. Strike up a conversation. You never know where art might lead.
