The City of North Tonawanda and the North Tonawanda School District have entered into a new shared services agreement, establishing a strong, formal partnership that prioritizes student well-being and the efficient use of city resources.

This newly formed agreement allows for greater collaboration between the city and the school district, creating a framework for programs and services that benefit both students and the broader community.

Among the initial cooperative efforts are the placement of school resource officers (SROs) within school buildings, and the provision of crossing guard services by the city to help ensure students travel safely to and from school.

In addition to these services, the agreement introduces new support for emergency infrastructure needs on school property. The city’s Water Distribution Department and Department of Public Works will be available to assist with underground water, sewer, and sanitary system repairs, as well as backfilling, paving and patching of affected areas. These services will be provided on an as-needed basis, subject to availability, with the school district reimbursing the city for labor, materials, equipment and other associated costs. This aspect of the agreement allows for more immediate and efficient care of the school grounds by leveraging North Tonawanda’s city services.

“This new agreement marks a meaningful step forward in how our city and school district work together,” Mayor Austin J. Tylec said. “It reflects a mutual commitment to safety, efficiency, and responsible use of taxpayer dollars – all in service to our community’s future.”

Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Jachlewski added, “This agreement – building on previous collaborations – demonstrates our commitment to putting students first and strengthening our community. By aligning resources and working in close partnership with the city, we’re not only improving safety and infrastructure, but also cultivating a culture of collaboration that encourages deeper community engagement and shared pride in our schools and city.”

The shared services agreement reflects a broader philosophy embraced by both city and school leadership – that collaboration leads to stronger, more resilient communities. Through this new partnership, North Tonawanda is setting a model for how local governments and school districts can align resources and efforts to better serve their residents.
