Pediatrician and public health expert received Outstanding Service Award at annual gala
Erie County Press Release
Erie County Commissioner of Health Dr. Gale Burstein recently received the Outstanding Service Award at the Medical Society of the County of Erie’s (MSCE) annual gala. The award recognizes exceptional dedication and service within the medical field, honoring individuals who have gone above and beyond in commitment to improving health care, advancing medical knowledge, and supporting patients and colleagues in Erie County.
The Outstanding Service Award is presented to someone who demonstrates outstanding contributions to patient care, medical research or health care innovation; has had a significant impact on improving health care outcomes; has shown commitment to the Medical Society of the County of Erie on a local, state or national level; and has provided notable leadership in addressing health care challenges or advancing medical ethics.
“For the past 13 years, Dr. Burstein has applied her skills as a pediatrician, a researcher, a scientist and a manager to lead one of our largest departments,” Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz said. “From navigating a global pandemic and opioid crisis to addressing gun violence, lead poisoning and winter storms, her steady leadership, intense focus, and commitment to positive systems changes have made our county a healthier place to live and work.”
MSCE President Dr. Iris Danziger, who presented the award, praised Burstein’s tireless efforts and leadership.
“I’ve had a front-row seat to her dedication and tenacity as commissioner of health,” Danziger said. “She led the county’s COVID-19 response while simultaneously tackling the opioid epidemic, expanding access to reproductive health care, and working to improve the overall health of our residents.”
Founded in 1821, the Medical Society of the County of Erie has a long history of physician leadership and innovation. Its members were instrumental in founding the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and have played a vital role in the development of hospitals and health care systems throughout the region.
