On June 7, 2005, Lt. Col. Terrence Crowe was killed by Iraqi insurgents in Tal Afar, Iraq. He was 44 years old at the time and was the only Islander to be killed in the Iraq war, also known as Operation Iraqi Freedom.

For the seventh year in a row, 7,300 flags will blanket the grounds of the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park throughout Memorial Day weekend to represent the average number of U.S. veterans who have lost their battle with PTSD per year, an average of 22 per day. From May 23-25, walk or drive by the Naval Park to see the installation, made possible by The Battle Within Foundation.

Grand Island voters voted down the proposed $81,685,805 school budget for 2026-27 on Tuesday. The vote was 1,352 against the budget, and 1,280 in favor. Voters also turned down proposition two: $672,000 for the purchase of vehicles. The vote was 1,334 against the proposition, and 1,280 in favor.
