Erie County to host paint collection event in Buffalo

Wed, Mar 18th 2026 02:20 pm

Press release

The Erie County Department of Environment and Planning wants to help residents to celebrate Earth Day and jump-start their spring cleaning by getting unneeded paint out of their houses and on its way to being recycled.

Registration is now open for a paint-only collection event being held Saturday, April 18, in the City of Buffalo. All Erie County collection events are free, but preregistration is required. Registration can be completed online at www.erie.gov/recycling or by calling the information line at 716-858-6800. Appointments are limited and will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.

The April 18 paint-only collection event is sponsored by GreenSheen, a company that makes new, ecofriendly paint from recycled paint. It will accept latex, oil-based and acrylic paint, stains, shellacs, lacquers, sealers, varnishes and urethanes for recycling at this event.

Please note that no household hazardous waste will be collected at this event. Erie County will announce upcoming household hazardous waste collection events and additional paint collections soon.

Additional sponsors of this paint-only collection include Buffalo State University, Grant Amherst Business Association, City of Buffalo, New York State Sen. Jeremy J. Zellner, and UNYSE Environmental Consultants.

There are additional options to recycle paint through the New York postconsumer paint collection program, which requires paint manufacturers to collect, reuse, recycle and properly dispose of postconsumer paint.

For more information about paint recycling, visit www.erie.gov/recycling and click “Paint Recycling,” or visit www.paintcare.org.
