Last week, the Town of Lewiston declined a request made by the Village of Lewiston for Greenway funding in support of a new waterfront pavilion.
On Tuesday, village Mayor Anne Welch and Deputy Mayor Vic Eydt said they were disappointed their town counterparts didn’t wait to receive more information before rendering a decision.
“We were hoping to be on their Feb. 24 agenda, and I got a letter the other day stating that the board took it up at the work session (on Feb. 10) and denied our request,” Welch said. “I guess we’re stopped dead in the water right now.”
“I’m just a little upset. … We requested a specific date, and they went ahead,” Eydt said. “We never even had a chance to do a presentation of our own. That was upsetting.”
At the village’s Feb. 3 work session, Welch said her board initially sought state funding for a new 20-feet-by-30-feet pavilion, looking to replace what was lost to prepandemic flooding. When that petition was denied, she said an appeal could be made to the town.
Seven days later, Supervisor Steve Broderick said the town has projects of its own that require funding, and that the municipality has already provided funds for myriad village projects.
“It’s unfortunate, but hopefully we can still find some funding,” Welch said.
“We had great support letters (from local and elected leaders), and people that want to see it,” she added.
