Different proposals will steer whether or not the Town of Wheatfield uses a $500,000 bond to pay for garbage totes in the municipality for its new garbage contract.

Bids for a new garbage contract are not set to be opened until May 19. Still, town officials, at a regular business meeting Monday, voted on whether or not to authorize Supervisor Don MacSwan to bond the money. The resolution was unanimously supported.

MacSwan characterized the move as a way to move quickly once the bids are opened.

“Because it takes a while, we had to do it now,” he said after the meeting. “What will happen is we’ll go over the bids, and our budget director will look to see what is beneficial for the town financially.”

MacSwan also addressed the audience at the meeting.

“Just so the residents have an idea of what we’re doing here, as you know we are bidding out the garbage contract,” he said. “We’re bidding it out three ways. One, where we will leave it as it is without the totes. Two, we purchase the totes. Three, the garbage company paying for the totes. We’ll see how the bids come in and, whatever it the best for the town, we’ll do it.”

The last two-year extension for the refuse and recycling contract between the Town of Wheatfield and Modern Disposal, which was made in January of 2019, will expire Dec. 31.
