Historical Association of Lewiston Press Release
The Historical Association of Lewiston will present Vince Schiffert and Joe Rickard for a program titled, “The Tuscarora Tradition of Sturgeon Spear Fishing.” This presentation is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, May 22, at the Lutheran Church of the Messiah Fellowship Hall, 915 Oneida St.
Vince and Joe’s presentation will talk about Tuscarora communities over time and place. It will focus on their connection to the rivers and streams they lived near, and the fish they relied on from those waterways. The waterways and fishing history from North Carolina to their present community will be discussed.
Schiffert is a former teacher at the Tuscarora School and Niagara Wheatfield High School. He’s also a member of the Tuscarora History Group and enjoys talking about Tuscarora history. Rickard is a lifelong hunter and outdoorsman. He grew up spear fishing with his dad and uncles on the Niagara River and some other local streams.
This meeting is HAL’s annual meeting, so there will be a short business presentation before the speakers. Dues-paying members will be able to vote for candidates to fill the board of trustees.
This community event is free and open to all, but donations are greatly appreciated to help support the Lewiston Museum. Refreshments will be served.
