American Legion Portage Post No. 1465 will dedicate a memorial monument to honor the Polish American Veterans who served in World War I’s Polish Blue Army, also known as Haller’s Army, and who were parishioners of Holy Trinity R.C. Church in Niagara Falls.
The dedication will take place at Historic Holy Trinity at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 31, at 1419 Falls St., Niagara Falls. All are welcome to join in honoring these veterans.
The Blue Army, which got its name from the French Blue uniforms they wore, was a military contingent that fought in France until the Armistice was signed in 1918; and then went on to fight in Poland against the Ukrainians and Russian Bolsheviks, eventually winning Poland its independence for the first time in over a hundred years.
Holy Trinity was one of many locations where Gen. Haller came to recruit soldiers for his army.
This ceremony is open to the public, and event organizers expect reenactors from Niagara-on-the-Lake to participate.
Historic Holy Trinity Church complex is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is run under the auspices of Niagara Heritage of Hope and Service Inc.
