Smelt Fest ushered in the season on Friday.
Unfortunately, that season was winter.
The Lewiston waterfront was a balmy 50 degrees, windy and, at times, rainy – but that didn’t stop people from coming out to scoop up their cups of deep-fried fish. In fact, people came out to the foot of the Griffon Brewery and Gastropub – where samples were served – well before the 6 p.m. start time.
Smelt Fest was coordinated by the Upward Niagara Chamber of Commerce, with 50/50 raffle proceeds going to the Niagara River Anglers Association. It was originally set to take place at Academy Park, but moved to South Water Street out of concern over the potential for wet, muddy fields.

Serving up smelt inside the Griffon food truck was Lauren Falsetti.
