North Tonawanda Botanical Garden Press Release
Celebrate the Erie Canal’s 200th birthday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the North Tonawanda Botanical Garden, 1825 Sweeney St. (across from Deerwood Golf Course).
Join the North Tonawanda Botanical Garden Organization (NTBGO) for a full day of festivities as its commemorates the 200th anniversary of the historic Erie Canal. This free, family-friendly event offers something for everyone – history buffs, nature lovers, children, and curious minds of all ages:
•Speaker series (meet at the Gazabo) Explore the legacy and impact of the Erie Canal through engaging talks:
√ 9 a.m. – Architecture of the Erie Canal
√ 10 a.m. – Environmental awareness in canal construction
√ 11 a.m. – How the Erie Canal was built
√ noon – The Erie Canal boat Seneca Chief
√ 1 p.m. – Women on the canal
√ 2 p.m. – Meet Joseph Ellicott (portrayed by Dennis Upton, surveyor of the Holland Land Purchase)
•Discover the beauty and restoration efforts of the Botanical Garden (meet at the information table)
√ Garden tours – 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.
√ Shoreline restoration walks – 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
•Kayaking experiences for beginners: Learn the basics of kayaking with guided sessions at: 10 a.m., noon and 2:30 p.m. Preregistration is required through the North Tonawanda Department of Youth, Recreation & Parks.
•Additional attractions
√ Educational and community organization booths
√ Plant sales and basket raffle supporting the future Conservation Visitor Center (9 a.m. until 2 p.m.)
√ Live music by Matt’s Music
√ Delicious food from M&T BBQ (on-site) and Sweeney Hose Co. No. 7 (take-away chowder)
