The “Elementary Turkey Trot,” held at Grand Island High School’s track on Nov. 8, featured running races and a basket raffle, among other activities. Visitors to the event included a Viking and a few turkeys.

Students and their families were asked to bring nonperishable food to donate to the Grand Island Neighbors Foundation.

“This event plays a crucial role in supporting our holiday food distribution in December,” said Dave Conboy, president of the Grand Island Neighbors Foundation. “Special thanks to Grand Island School Superintendent Dr. Kevin Graham, Elementary school principals David Janicki-Howe (Kaegebein), Stephanie Anderson (Sidway) and Max Pikula (Huth); physical education teachers Mrs. Marsala and Mr. Nicolia (Kaegebein), Mrs. Cunningham and Mr. Ross (Huth), and Mrs. Martinez and Mr. Willats (Sidway); and master of ceremonies Mr. Wood from Veronica Connor. Their dedication to ensuring the success of the ‘Turkey Trot’ is greatly appreciated.”

There were four separate races for students, based on grade level, and one race for the elementary school principals. Students from kindergarten through fifth grade were eligible to participate in the races, which were one lap around the track. Students in third, fourth and fifth grades were given the option of running a second lap. All three principals were dressed as turkeys for their race.

Conboy said the Neighbors Foundation “would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the administrators, teachers, students, parents and PTA members who participated in the annual ‘Turkey Trot.’

Carley Antonelli teaches health and physical education at Veronica Connor Middle School. She serves as a board member for the Neighbors Foundation.

"The generous donation of nonperishable food is vital to the Neighbors Foundation, particularly as we approach the holiday season,” Antonelli said. “It is incredibly rewarding to see Islanders, especially the young kids, come out and support an event that benefits others in our community.”

Conboy said he enjoys this annual event: “What makes me happiest is seeing the generosity of Islanders and the joyful manner in which our community comes together to serve others, especially in trying circumstances we have now where the need is greater than ever.

“We are deeply grateful for the continued support of the Grand Island Schools and look forward to working together to make this holiday season brighter for those in need.
