What does Thanksgiving mean to you? Being kind? Being thankful?
Showing gratitude?
There is an old Irish tale of an orphan girl who lives with her cruel and uncaring aunt and uncle. One day, a poor, ugly old woman appears at their door. She is cold, tired and hungry. She asks for something to eat and a warm bed. The aunt and uncle refuse her and turn her away, but the little girl offers the old woman her supper and bed.
The old woman stays for several days. Each day, the little girl offers the old woman kindness over the objections of her aunt and uncle.
Finally, the old woman decides to leave but, before she leaves, the old woman asks the little girl to care for her sickly dog. Over time, the little girl nurses the dog back to health.
What is unknown to the little girl is that the old woman and the dog are fairies in disguise.
When the old woman returns, she is a fairy queen who turns the dog into a handsome fairy prince. Because the little girl showed kindness to the fairies, they gave the little girl a happy, prosperous life.
Mark Twain writes, “Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.”
At some point, we will be shown kindness. Some will take it for granted, while others will be grateful. Maybe that’s what we should remember at Thanksgiving. Being kind. Being thankful and grateful for all that we are given.
