Ryan, who will be sworn in as the 64th mayor of the City of Buffalo on Jan. 1, 2026, is resigning after nearly five years as a member of the State Senate. He previously served in the New York State Assembly from 2011-19.
As a legislator, Ryan has been instrumental in helping to transform Western New York’s economy. He has championed policies that promote a fair economy, protect taxpayer dollars, and provide lower taxes for middle-class families and small businesses. He has led transformational investments in housing, education, waterfront development, and neighborhood revitalization, and has been a strong advocate for reproductive freedom, gun safety, and clean water initiatives.
Ryan said, “From Buffalo and Grand Island to Tonawanda and Amherst, it has been an honor to serve the people of Western New York and be their voice in Albany. Each of the communities I represented has its own character, challenges and strengths, and I am grateful for the trust my constituents placed in me to advocate on their behalf.
“As I prepare to begin a new chapter in public service, I want to thank the residents of the 61st District and all the communities I have represented for their support, encouragement, and honest feedback over the years. I am proud of the work we have done together to move our region forward, and I look forward to continuing that work as mayor of the City of Buffalo.”
