Press Release
In a heartfelt tribute to his Scottish-born father's unspoken passions, longtime Lewiston resident and community pillar Tim Henderson has published "Isle of View Anthology," a captivating collection of poems and prose unearthed from a forgotten family closet.
This hidden gem, penned by John Henderson in the 1930s and 1940s, offers a poignant glimpse into the immigrant experience, blending humor, introspection, and a deep love for the world – echoing the rugged beauty of Scotland's isles.
John Henderson, born in Scotland in 1915, immigrated to America in the 1920s, settling in Lewiston. He became a revered playwright, humorist, author and educator, serving as vice principal at LaSalle Senior High School.
The family home on Oneida Street, where Tim still resides, became a hub of creativity.
"Dad wrote these as a young man coming of age and struggling with his deep and profound love of the world," Tim explained. "What he wrote were the words that he found so hard to speak."
The anthology's title, a clever play on "I Love You," pays homage to the Scottish isles, inviting readers to explore themes of longing, heritage and resilience that resonate with anyone tracing their Celtic lineage.
Tim Henderson, 78, a Vietnam veteran, is no stranger to preserving history and culture in Western New York. Honored as Lewiston's Citizen of the Year in 2016, he is a dedicated environmental advocate, writer, historical reenactor, and was a key figure in the Lewiston Council on the Arts and Lewiston Museum. His efforts include acquiring rare 19th-century photos of Lewiston's dock for public display and even achieving a black sash in kung fu at age 72.
As a father who has faced personal tragedies, including the loss of his son, Ryan, in 2011, Tim's commitment to the community mirrors his father's legacy of education and storytelling.
The book's release arrives amid the Niagara Region's vibrant celebration of Scottish heritage, home to the annual Niagara Celtic Heritage Festival & Highland Games – the largest Celtic event in New York. Drawing thousands to honor Irish, Scottish and Welsh traditions through music, dance and athletics, the festival underscores the area's deep ties to clans and immigrant stories.
For those with Scottish ancestry in Niagara County and beyond, "Isle of View Anthology" serves as a treasured keepsake, bridging generations and evoking the misty highlands.
Priced at $25, the limited-edition keepsake book is a must-have for literary enthusiasts and local history buffs. Contact the Book Corner in Niagara Falls for availability, or call Henderson directly at 716-754-7179.
