Mayor Anne Welch and the Village of Lewiston posed Monday with Robert Paul, commander of the Youngstown flotilla, as Welch proclaimed May 16-22, 2026, as National Safe Boating Week in the Village of Lewiston – urging “all those who enjoy our waters to practice safe boating habits, seek proper education, and ‘Wear It’ to ensure a safe and successful season on the Niagara River.”
The proclamation notes, “The Village of Lewiston is a premier destination for recreational boating, fishing and tourism, uniquely situated along the beautiful but powerful waters of the Lower Niagara River; and … as the boating season begins, it is essential that all residents and visitors recognize the importance of safety on the water to ensure that our maritime traditions remain enjoyable and accident-free.” This is particularly necessary as “data from the U.S. Coast Guard indicates that drowning is the leading cause of death in boating accidents, with 87% of drowning victims not wearing a life jacket, and that 70% of fatalities … occur on vessels where the operator had not received boating safety instruction.” Moreover, “alcohol remains the leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents, accounting for 20% of known deaths. … While New York state achieved a historic low in boating fatalities in 2024, the full implementation of Brianna's Law in 2025 underscores the critical need for mandatory boating education and responsible operation. …
“The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, 9th Eastern Region, Division 3, works tirelessly to provide no-cost vessel safety checks and public outreach to protect the Lewiston community from the inherent risks of strong currents and complex river conditions. … National Safe Boating Week serves as a vital opportunity for local leadership to encourage boaters to wear life jackets, verify required safety equipment, and operate sober.”
