Erie County Clerk Michael P. Kearns has unveiled a new approach aimed at enhancing customer experience and reducing the time standing in line at the DMV. Beginning Feb. 24, individuals with appointments at their local auto bureau branch will be welcomed into an exclusive “DMV Express Lane,” ensuring a more efficient and hassle-free visit.
In the past, customers who had taken the initiative to schedule appointments found themselves standing in the same long lines as those without appointments when trying to check-in. This often led to frustration and confusion, leaving many to question, “What’s the point of making an appointment if I still have to wait?”
To tackle this challenge head-on, Kearns and his team at the Erie County Auto Bureau have designed a “DMV Express Lane,” which is meant to entice more individuals to book reservations, while also significantly improving wait times and transaction speeds for those who do.
Kearns said, “By managing arrivals effectively, customers can look forward to being served promptly and without the worry of seeing a long line of people waiting ahead of them.”
The revamped customer journey begins upon entering the DMV branch, where customers with an appointment can use the “DMV Express Lane” and have priority access to check-in at the customer service desk. This proactive strategy establishes a more organized and efficient process, addressing the common misconceptions that customers who make a reservation have to wait just like walk-in customers.
Customers with appointments are encouraged to arrive at the DMV no more than 15 minutes prior, enter the “DMV Express Lane” with their confirmation number ready, and they will be greeted by a customer service representative who will guide them to the next steps in their transaction and provide them an “A” ticket number.
Today’s DMV manages a substantial volume of intricate and extensive transactions, which range from registering a vehicle, and issuing licenses for commercial and non-commercial drivers to ensuring compliance with the intricate motor vehicle code (such as purchasing and/or selling a vehicle, insurance lapses, state-to-state verification services and the REAL ID compliance standard).
“No matter who you are, where you reside, or what you do, everyone must interact with the DMV at some point,” Kearns said. “However, this is not your grandparents' or even your parents' DMV; we have evolved. Customers who have an appointment are granted priority service, while walk-in customers will still receive the superior service they have come to expect and deserve.”
In order to attain those goals, Kearns has made remarkable advancements in improving the Erie County Auto Bureau’s reputation by implementing pivotal strategies such as advanced appointment systems, streamlined processes, exceptional customer service, and actively seeking feedback to pinpoint areas for enhancement. The overarching objective is to craft an experience that is not only convenient and efficient, but also user-friendly, minimizing wait times while maximizing accessibility for individuals who prefer to secure appointments, either online or through the clerk’s outreach center.
Kearns added, “From my first day in office, my staff has been relentless in our mission to elevate customer service, listen to our customers and staff in an effort to enhance the overall reputation of our auto bureaus, and we continue to do that every single day.”
For those eager to bypass the lines at the Erie County Auto Bureau, and truly benefit using the “DMV Express Lane,” appointments are required and can be made by contacting the clerk’s outreach center at 716-858-8864 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays or online 24/7 at erie.gov/clerk.
