In response to the ongoing springtime flooding issues present within the Village of Lewiston, primarily in the northeast section, the Village of Lewiston Department of Public Works will perform a storm sewer upgrade at North Ninth and Mohawk streets, to 771 Mohawk, which is the connection to a large, concrete storm main that discharges directly to the Niagara River.
Superintendent Anthony Mang said, “The flooding in this area is a result of Town of Lewiston and Village of Lewiston systems converging together and sharing one discharge pipe located between Oxbow Lane and Chicora, and then proceeding through Kiwanis Park to the parkway state ditch.
“This storm sewer upgrade will effectively reroute large portion of rainwater from the Kiwanis Park discharge directly to the river in an effort to alleviate the strain placed on this single discharge. Backups and flooding occur when the pipe/ditches cannot accommodate the amount of water being introduced.”
He noted this redirection of water will ultimately create a secondary discharge pipe that “will accommodate all the stormwater from North Fifth to North Ninth, from Center Street to Mohawk Street,” thus “effectively eliminating it from ever reaching the Kiwanis Park pipe.”
“We are confident that this project will reduce the amount of flooding-related issues currently being experienced by longtime village residents, as well as helping overall drainage and infiltration issues associated with older infrastructure,” Mang said. “We thank the residents that will be directly impacted by this project in advance for your cooperation in helping to make the Village of Lewiston better as a whole. These projects are vital to the continued function of our infrastructure.”
