Niagara County Sheriff's Office investigating fatal MVA

At 6:44 a.m. Thursday, the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office communications center received multiple 911 calls reporting a motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian on Niagara Falls Boulevard in the Town of Wheatfield.

Preliminary investigation showed a 2021 Jeep SUV was traveling northbound on Niagara Falls Boulevard when it struck a pedestrian. The pedestrian suffered trauma from the collision and was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene. The name of the pedestrian is being withheld at this time until notification to family can be made.

The driver of the Jeep is fully cooperating with police. The investigation into the incident in continuing by the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office accident investigation unit and criminal investigation bureau.

Alleged impaired driver

•At 7:42 a.m., near 2335 Niagara Falls Blvd., the NCSO was investigating a fatal motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian. The investigation had all northbound traffic rerouted to protect scene integrity and all emergency personnel involved. During this time, a red 2010 Chevrolet was observed driving around all traffic control, fire police and emergency vehicles, and then began traveling northbound in the southbound lane on Niagara Falls Boulevard.

Members of the NCSO were able to intervene and have the driver of the Chevrolet pull the vehicle into a driveway and out of the lane of traffic. After an investigation into the traffic incident, the driver of the red Chevrolet was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs, aggravated unlicensed operation (third degree), and multiple traffic infractions. Additional charges may be pending for the driver, who was brought to the Niagara County Correctional Facility to await arraignment in CAP court, and a future court date in the Town of Wheatfield.
